Rev. Ryan Motter

Rev. Ryan Motter serves as our Associate Minister, working primarily with worship leadership, relationship building and pastoral care, spiritual formation, and justice and mercy ministries.

Ryan’s call to Community is in some ways a homecoming: prior to his seminary days, Ryan served as a Summer Intern here in 2007.  Since then, Ryan has served two different congregations in Tennessee and, most recently, served from February 2011 to May 2017 as Senior Minister of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Smithville, Missouri.  During his time in Smithville, the congregation experienced a renewal of its spirit of community and community engagement, and Ryan helped to reposition Smithville FCC for growth and success in the changing ministry environment of the twenty-first century.  Ryan also serves as the Chair of the Tall Oaks Commission for Tall Oaks Camp and Conference Center in Linwood, KS.  Tall Oaks is an ecumenical, interfaith, nonprofit and corporate outdoor partnership that was founded by the Disciples of Christ Church.
Ryan is a TCU Horned Frog, where he earned his Bachelor’s in English, Religion and General Business, and a Vanderbilt Commodore, where he earned his Master of Divinity.

In October 2014, Ryan married Suzanne Kerr, also a minister at Community.  Although they met while they were both at TCU, Ryan and Suzanne lost track of one another until Ryan moved to Kansas City to serve in Smithville and Suzanne reconnected with him.

Ryan and Suzanne are parents to Lydia, as well as “Baby Sister,” due in November 2017, and a girl dog named Jeff Louise.  Ryan loves to read, write for his blog, journal and take long walks with Jeff Louise.  He is part of the Academy of Spiritual Formation, where he’s been diving deeper into a life of Contemplative Spirituality, and is currently reading the complete works of Henri Nouwen, in chronological order.  Other joys include a great cup of coffee, tacos, and any meal that’s prepared completely from scratch.
